Here at Brilliant agency, we think a little differently. None of the recipes that you see in our pictures are fake. We truly believe that there’s no reason food shouldn’t look beautiful just as it is, in all its natural glory. We want to convey authentic cooking that looks achievable in the consumers’ own homes. This is the third instalment of styling it out giving you honest food styling and photography tricks that make the most of what a dish already has!

7. Photographing food in natural lighting is absolutely key! So make sure to keep those curtains open, the sky floods in naturally blue-white toned light whereas electrical lighting is much warmer, with yellow and orange tones. If you’re able, photography your recipes close to a window. Natural light will saturate and bathe all of your hard work in clean white hues, really allowing the colours to shine through crisply and clearly. Natural light picks up colours that a flash won’t. You want the photos to make the consumer want to reach out and take a bite. It also negates all yellow tinges that are reminiscent of really bad takeaway photography!

8. Aside from the amazing recipe that has just been laboriously and lovingly created you really want to set the scene for the food. Props need to be considered as well as everything that’s featured within the shot. This ranges from plates and cutlery, background surfaces, glasses, flowers, shoes, the list goes on. Everything contributes to the tone of the picture. Is it a light Summer salad or a real hearty Winter stew? The audience needs to know and we do this by revealing the tools that we used in order to cook the recipe and how it is suggested to be served!

9. We’re never afraid to leave traces of our culinary process. It’s important to show the audience how we created the finished recipe. This can be a scattering of herbs, a dusting of flour or some ‘accidental’ (carefully blobbed) sauce. People love storytelling and it creates a powerful and emotional connection between the viewer and the food.
