Today’s National Unplugging Day! What’s that? A social media agency telling you to stop using social media — are you crazy? Hear us out.

According to the Telegraph, the average person checks their phone 200 times a day – that’s once every six and a half minutes. I’m not that bad, you’re thinking… Okay, fine. But how often would you say you find yourself mindlessly scrolling? A lot, we bet.

Would you read a book containing all the posts you find on your Facebook feed?

No way. So why then would you waste hours of your life looking at awfully constructed posts on a screen?

It could be easy here to say ditch social media… Delete your accounts. Log off, and move on. But the thing is in today’s society we do need it. Why? Because it has the capacity to make our lives better. We can connect and promote through it; we can inspire, educate and engage with it.

You know what we don’t need though? Bad social media.

You know what we’re talking about… Posts that scream “Hands up, who’s excited?” or “Did you know that…” or “What’s your #MondayMotivation!” Where’s the crafted, unique tone of voice? Where’s the personality? The amazing graphics and awe-inspiring video?

That’s what we work towards at Brilliant. To be pioneers of brilliant social media. To create feeds that make you stop and appreciate, rather than just scroll on by.

So this National Unplugging Day we say have a digital detox. Unplug, unwind, and then come back and declutter your digital channels. Unfollow any accounts that aren’t visually pleasing or aesthetically stimulating. Keep your feeds clean, slick, and interesting!

If you’re going to use social media, use it mindfully. Make sure it’s brilliant, or else what’s the point?
